Find Out Who's Watching Your Videos

YouTube have announced a further enhancement to their video statistics, which adds details about the demographics of users who view your videos. First launched in March this year, YouTube Insight now provides even more data to enhance your video marketing efforts.

Video publishers now have access to view count information broken down by age group (such as 18-24), gender and a combination of the two. These details are pulled from the details provided to YouTube when users register an account.

Here is a screen shot for the demographics tab from one of our videos:

Another new tab I've noticed is the Discovery tab which gives information on where your main video views are coming from. Here is an example:

If you click on one of the views it then breaks down the individual elements of that traffic source. For example, clicking on Google search will then display a list of all the keywords used to find your video. This can help you uncover if you've optimized your video for the right keywords and if they are driving traffic to it.

Business owners can now use these stats to profile what type of users are watching their videos and then match this against their customer base to see if they're hitting the right audience.

If you're keen to check it out for yourself, you can find these new metrics under the "Demographics" tab within the Insight dashboard. Click on the "Insight" button under "Account > My Videos."

YouTube Finally Launches Video Statistics

In a move that's been a long time coming, YouTube have finally released a video analytics tool for all users of the site. The statistics tool lets users see the number of views their video has received and where in the world these views come from for a given date range. The look and feel of the stats package should be very similar to anyone currently using Google Analytics.

While YouTube is a fantastic platform for hosting and distributing online video, I've always felt it lacked the kind of reporting that you would get from hosting the video yourself. The new analytics tool should help to solve some of these issues.

While the analytics tool is only new, the stats themselves go back quite a while, for one of my earlier videos the stats go back to the 1st of April 2007.

I've taken some screenshots below:

Views by Country:

Popularity:

These basic stats should help online business and marketers understand where their videos are popular and how their number of views changes over time. While I would love to see some more in-depth stats like average drop off points and abandonment rates, I think this is a great start for YouTube.

If you want to see stats for your video, try clicking on the "About this Video" button under "My account > Videos, Favorites, Playlists > Manage my Videos." As always you can let us know what you think by leaving a blog comment below!

Google Universal Search - Google Maps the Biggest Winner!

Google released Google Universal Search in mid May 2007 which saw the integration of all its various search verticals including Google Maps, Google Images and Google Video into the main web results.

Although Google Universal Search has only been around for under a month, early results from a recent study by Hitwise show the biggest winners from this enhancement were Google Maps with a 20.34 % boost in traffic and Youtube with an 8.26% increase in traffic.

Percentage U.S. Visits to Custom Category of Top Google Properties

I believe that traffic to Google Maps will continue its fantastic growth in the future as more enhancements like Google Street View are introduced and local search continues its growth.
