Search Engine News:: MSN Search Tool Bar adds Tabbed Browsing

Users of the MSN Search Tool Bar would see a slightly different Internet Explorer. MSN Search Tool Bar Version 02.05.000.1082 adds in tabbed browsing functionality. It is only available if using the MSN Search Tool Bar.

Whilst this functionality has existed for a number of releases in Firefox, it is the first time that Microsoft have included this funtctionality in the market leading Internet Explorer.

Microsoft have called out that future version of Internet Explorer (such as the version to be released with Windows Vista) will included Tabbed Browsing as standard.

It is the first time since the "browsers wars" that Microsoft have been forced to play catch up in terms of features with another internet browsing. Further competition by Firefox will see Microsoft continue to innovate.

Research: Being Online Defines Way of Life for Teenagers

Teenagers log onto the Internet more often and do more things online than ever before. A new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project titled "Teens and Technology" reveals that 87% of teenagers between the ages of 12 and 17 are now online. Their favorite online pastimes are playing games, getting news and health information and online shopping (great news for online retailers now and in the years to come!).

Half of the 21 million American teenagers who are online spend time on the Internet every day. Teenagers also use the Internet as a way to communicate with others and connect with their friends, with 75% using instant messaging and many using this as a medium for expressing themselves through personalized icons and profiles.

However, email no longer is a "killer app" for these teenagers who now prefer instant messaging, cell phones and text messaging as a way to interact with their friends. Accordingly, teenagers also have broad access to advanced communication tools, with 84% of them saying that they own at least one device such as a desktop or laptop computer, cell phone or blackberry.

Search Engine Technology: Microsoft Launches Street Level Satellite Search

Move over, Google Earth? Hot on the heels of Google's spectacular satellite imaging service, MSN has launched its own local search service called MSN Virtual Earth, featuring satellite images and maps which integrate with MSN's local search results.

While the service is called Virtual Earth, it is currently really only "Virtual U.S.A.", since satellite images are only available for the United States. MSN has said that it is planning to expand the service globally in the future. For now, MSN Virtual Earth is certainly no serious competition to Google Earth, its broad global coverage and cool bird's eye view and zoom features. The one think I like about MSN's service is that it automatically overlays street names onto the aerial images, which Google Earth doesn't do.

Search Engine Corporate: Yahoo! Gets into Widgets

Here's another news snippet from the acquisition front. While Google bought Brazilian search engine todobr.com.br last week, Yahoo! is testing unknown waters with its latest purchase.

The search engine and portal giant has acquired tiny software company Pixoria, makers of the hip Konfabulator Widgets. Even though the name Konfabulator Widgets sounds like they are something straight out of Fred and George Weasley's Wizard Wheezes joke shop, the Konfabulator Widgets are actually small desktop applications that enable users to look at local weather, stock quotes or other information without opening a Web browser.

For Yahoo!, the acquisition is all about providing users with more Internet content in ways that don't rely on web browsers. There are currently over a 1000 different widgets available (ranging from traffic cams and random "The Simpsons" quotes to news feeds and picture viewers) and users are encouraged to develop and share their own widgets. The Konfabulator software, which used to cost $19.95, can now be downloaded for free from widgets.yahoo.com. Of course there is also a Yahoo! Search Konfabulator Widget!

It'll be interesting to see how Yahoo! will start to monetize the widgets ... I can almost picture text ads or banners showing up in the widgets in the future.

Search Engine Corporate: Google Buys Belo Horizonte

Akwan Inforamation Technologies, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the company that operated the Brazilian search engine todobr.com.br, was acquired by Google last week. The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, but Google said that it will establish a new research and development center for Latin America at Akwan's head office. The search engine site todobr.com.br is now being redirected to Google's Brazilian site google.com.br.

According to InternetWorldStats.com, Brazil currently has about 22.3 million Internet users. With Brazil's population estimated to be around 181 million, the country has an Internet penetration rate of only 12.3%. However, Internet usage in Brazil grew at the impressive rate of 346% between 2000 and 2005, and Brazilians already represent 47.2% of all Internet users in South America. Google certainly has picked an exciting target market supporting its ongoing global expansion with this Brazilian acquisition.

Search Engine Corporate:: Google and Microsoft Revenue Up, Yahoo! Revenue Down

Google and Microsoft have both announced increase in their profits and revenues for the fourth quarter. Yahoo! saw increased profit but failed to meet analysts expectations on revenue growth.

Microsoft
Microsoft has increased profit by 37% (to $3.7billon) with an increase of 9% in revenue (to $10.16billion). The growth of Microsoft has been fueled by all divisions increasing sales. Microsoft has many divisions including:
  • Office
  • Windows;
  • Server products;
  • Xbox; and of course
  • MSN
Microsoft growth is largely software based and they are yet to capitalize on their huge investment in search. MSN revenue is due to advertising and revenue share with Overture.

Google
Contrast this with Google, which saw record revenue of $1.384 billion for the quarter. Over 53% of Google's revenue came from Google owned sites. The Google network contributed 46% of revenue. The network includes Ask Jeeves and AOL, where Google Ads are shown and also the Google Adsence network.

Effectively 99% of Google's revenue came from a single product line, unlike Microsoft's.

Yahoo!
Yahoo!! Announced revenues of $875million, falling some $7 million short of expectations. Earnings exceeded expectations but with a cautionary note. With Google growing so much in the same period and a proven history of over performing, the Yahoo! share price is expected to be hit hard.

To counter act this Yahoo!'s CEO and Chairman Terry ry Semel announced that Yahoo! would try to leverage the growth in search engine ads and "branded messages" by conducting an overhaul of it's search advertising technology later this year, to make it more valuable to advertise. This is an effort to attract a greater percentage spend of the advertisers dollar on the Yahoo! network.

Summary
The fear must be there for Yahoo! that when MSN release their own paid search product a huge amount of revenue will be lost. This will undoubtedly put pressure on the share price and make the investors nervous.

Whilst Google's growth is amazing, surely this can not be sustainable in the long term. With Microsoft also aiming squarely at Google, the pressure to continue this revenue growth will be huge.

Microsoft - on the other hand - have many different independent revenue streams and a large bank balance to challenge Google. With a bold call of "returning to double digit growth in 2006" Microsoft will be going hard to tackle all it's competitors in all markets. I can see MSN being extremely aggressive in the next 12 months as the search strategy starts to become more apparent.

Search Engine News: Google PR (and Backlink) Update

Google is updating again. Over the last week, numerous webmasters have reported changes in PageRanks and backlink counts. Experiences are mixed, with some webmasters reporting PageRank increases on relatively new sites, while others reported PageRank drops.

Search engine results pages and traffic volumes seem to be constant for most webmasters up to now. Of course the most relevant measure of the impact of Google's update doesn't lie in PageRank changes, but in the level of traffic that you receive from Google, which means that you should definitely have a solid web statistics package for your site.

If you are interested in implementing a web statistics package, we can recommend Hitslink - especially since you can get a free 30 day trial.

Search Engine Technology: MSN and Meta Tags

While it is true that a Web page's meta tags are not as important for ranking as they were in the early days of the Internet, ignoring them is still very risky nowadays - especially in regards to ranking on MSN.

Here is what MSN themselves have to say on this topic: "As the MSN Search web crawler MSNBot crawls your site, it analyzes the content on indexed pages and generates keywords to associate with each page. Then MSNBot extracts page content that is highly relevant to the keywords (often sentence segments that contain keywords or information in the description meta tag) and constructs the site description displayed in search results. The page title and URL are also extracted and displayed in search results."

MSN goes on to explain: "Since the descriptions are extracted from your indexed web pages, the best way to affect your site description is to ensure that your web pages effectively deliver the information you want to see in search results."

This means make sure that your title, description and keyword tags are well optimized and contain information that appeals to potential visitors. To find out more about optimization, check out our Learning Center. Suitable optimization services include Business Essentials and Optimizer Kit PLUS.

Search Engine News: isedn.org - The New Kid on the Block

A group of smaller search engines and directories has formed a new network as a counterweight to the large search engines that currently dominate the industry. While the focus of the new isedn.org network currently is on the pay-for-inclusion product they offer, it'll be interesting to see if the network evolves from its mainly commercial focus to an advocacy body for the large number of smaller search engines and directories.

Here are some extracts from their press release: "A new player has entered the online search arena calling itself the Independent Search Engine & Directory Network (ISEDN.ORG). Founded by ExactSeek.com in late June, 2005, the ISEDN has rapidly grown to 47 member sites ...

The ISEDN has adopted ExactSeek's hybrid pay-for-inclusion model which offers top 10 website exposure to search engine advertisers at fixed, flat fee rates. Similar in concept to Google's AdWords program without the pay-per-click element, the program has grown in popularity as pay-per-click costs soar and news of rampant click fraud continues to tarnish the pay-per-click model.

... Mel Strocen, CEO of Jayde Online, Inc., ExactSeek's parent company, said: "There is tremendous interest in the concept of an independent search organization that can act as a counter to the heavyweights in the search industry. The ISEDN is looking to focus media and public attention on a more affordable and reliable search advertising model than the one being promoted by the current leaders in the pay-per-click world."

Research: 2.76 Million New Hostnames Within One Month

According to a monthly Web server survey carried out by Internet services company Netcraft, the Internet has grown by 2.76 million hostnames between June and July 2005. This is the second largest monthly increase recorded by Netcraft, only surpassed by a 3.3 million hostname increase in May 2003 which marked the end of a stagnation phase after the dot com bubble burst.

Interestingly, the following growth factors are identified:

  • More small businesses now have a website because they are now more affordable.
  • A high growth in the number of blogs, including corporate blogs that are used for branding purposes.
  • The purchase of domain names as a speculative investment.
  • The ability to generate revenue through contextual pay-per-click advertising on parked domains and commercial blogs.
What does this mean for you? As the Internet is getting more crowded, it's certainly not getting any easier to attract visitors to your website. As a website owner, you constantly need to make sure that your online marketing strategy places you one step ahead of the competition!

The Top 10 Copywriting Tips for Higher Search Engine Ranking

You've probably heard it a thousand times before - the body copy, i.e. the visible text on your website, is absolutely critical for good ranking. Content IS king! Why? Search engine spiders (or crawlers) don't look at your website through human eyes. To be able to assess a site, they rely on words to provide the search engine algorithm with information about the site's topic and content, and its relevancy and relationship with other topics or websites. The more content you have, the more text the spider can find and the more valuable your site will be to both search engines and visitors. If a site only contains images that are named "JPG1", "JPG2" and so on, the search engine spider has absolutely nothing to work with.

So if the importance of copywriting in search engine marketing is a well known fact, why do so many website owners still neglect this area? Put simply, because good copywriting is time-consuming and difficult. However, it is an essential part of your search engine optimization strategy, and your effort will pay off, especially if you keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Write for your visitors, not for search engine spiders.

Here's a contradiction to start off with - you need to increase the text content of your site for the search engine spiders, but anything you write should be aimed at your visitors, i.e. real human beings.

  2. Don't repeat yourself.

Duplicating content, that is, repeating the same text on multiple pages, may sound like an easy way to increase your site's content, but is in actual fact a spamming technique that will get you into big trouble with search engines. Stay away from it!

  3. Include keywords that your visitors use.

Say you are a hotel owner in Northern California who wants to attract British tourists to your website. What search terms (or keywords) would British tourists type into a search engine when they are trying to organize their trip to California? Instead of saying "vacation in California", British searchers would use the phrase "holiday in California". You need to be aware of exactly what phrases people use to find the products or services you offer, and then make sure that you include those words in the body copy of your site in a natural way. This means including relevant terms often, but not too often as to appear forced or unnatural.

Here's where the concept of "keyword density" comes into play. Keyword density measures how often a certain keyword is contained on a Web page compared to the amount of overall text content. If a keyword is mentioned 10 times within 100 words of text, the keyword density is 10%.

Keyword density is one factor that search engines use to determine the ranking of a Web page. As a rough rule of thumb, keyword density for your important search terms should be high, but not too high. Your text should always sound natural and not like you had to squeeze your keywords in with brute force. There are many different opinions on what keyword density is optimal; numbers around 5% - 10% get mentioned. However, keyword density is also becoming less important than in the past, with search engines now using more complex semantics-based algorithms. The end result is: Make sure your search terms or keywords are mentioned in your text in a natural way and don't worry too much about exact measures.

  4. Add new copy regularly.

To make sure a search engine spider often visits your site, try to update your site at regular intervals. Add new pages, for example with background facts or frequently asked questions, add a news section or create an archive of past newsletters that contain valuable, durable information.

  5. Keep your writing simple but hard-hitting.

If you are selling products or service, your copy needs to sell your products for you. Include attention-grabbing headlines, your best offers, and expand on the benefits of your product or service. Testimonials are a great way to support sales copy; authentic customer statements make it easy for your readers to connect with your products and services.

  6. Longer is not always better.

Yes, you want a lot of text content including your most effective search terms on you site. But this doesn't mean that you should start creating extra long Web pages on which visitors have to scroll down for ages before they reach the end of the page. This is neither user nor search engine friendly! If the text content is really valuable, put in on a new page and create a meaningful site structure that links the content together, while keeping your end goal - sales conversion - in mind. Why not create detailed pages on your products or services? (see Tip 4).

  7. Include links to other pages.

Once visitors are on your site, you don't want to lose them again - so think carefully about how and where to include links to other sites. If you do link to other sites, ask them if they will add a reciprocal link back to you on their site. For search engine spiders, incoming links are an important way of assessing the relevancy of your site; topical inbound links will assist your link popularity. For example, say you run a hotel right next to the Pebble Beach Golf Club. If your site links to theirs in your "Local Sports & Activities" page, and they link to your site in their "Local Accommodation" section, you both win.

You can also make links within your site more search engine friendly by using keywords as links. Instead of using links like "Our guest rooms are individually decorated. Click here for a virtual tour.", use "Take a tour of our individually decorated guest rooms now!"

  8. Use formatting and highlighting.

Search engine spiders take note of text formatting elements. So make sure to include your important keywords in titles and sub-titles, use bolding, bullet-pointing and other highlighting methods. For headlines, you should always use the HTML headline tags H1 to H6 to make sure the search engine spiders recognize them.

Ideally, only use one H1 tag per page, with the lower tags being section headings. Heading tags are a great way of ensuring the search engine knows exactly what topic that page is about.

  9. Don't forget about your meta tags.

Meta tags from part of the HTML header of a web page, but are not displayed as visible text on your site. These tags include the title, keyword and description tags, which are important for your site's ranking as they provide search engine spiders with additional information about your site. Some search engines also display parts of the meta tags in their search results pages. This is why you should include your most important keywords in the meta tags, but also make sure the copy appeals to potential visitors.

  10. Always proofread.

Make sure you get your grammar right and check for typos and spelling mistakes. Not only do errors look bad to readers, they also can negatively impact on your ranking. If you consistently spelled "vacation" as "vaccation", your site won't be included in the search results when search engine users search for "California vacation".
