Search Engine Technology: How much of the Internet is Indexed in Search Engines?

A new study by scientists Antonio Gulli and Alessio Signorini estimates that the indexable World Wide Web currently contains about 11.5 billion web pages. The study also estimates the percentage coverage of the Internet by the four major search engines and the estimated intersection of the four indexes. The search engine coverages were calculated to be:

Google: 76.16%
Yahoo!: 69.32%
MSN: 61.90%
Ask Jeeves/Teoma: 57.62%

There is a difference between the 'indexed Web' and the 'total Web', with the indexable Web being defined as "the part of the Web which is considered for indexing by the major engines." It is estimated that the number of web pages that can't be reached by search engine crawlers is much higher than this. Examples of non-indexable web pages include secure or database driven pages.

The engines' index intersection was about 28.85% or 2.7 billion pages. No wonder search results differ so much from engine to engine!

Search Engine Technology: Around the World in 80 Seconds with Google Earth

Google Earth has landed in spectacular fashion. This new service from Google offers satellite imagery from around the world which can be overlaid with local search results and directions. Google Earth is a stand alone application (i.e. you need to install some software which is available for free, but your computer needs to meet certain system requirements) and provides you with a navigation panel that allows you to find, zoom in and out of, and rotate satellite images.

You can choose which local search results you want as overlay - for example, you can display restaurants or dentist locations right on top of the satellite picture, with a full listing next to the image. You can also view points of interest or facts like crime statistics as an overlay. You can make notes and bookmark your favorite views and even share them with other users.

There also is an advanced version available for $20 per year (Google Earth Plus) which offers higher resolution images, GPS support and some other advanced features.

Currently, Google Earth has detailed imagery for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and 38 large cities in other countries (local search only works in the three countries). The rest of the world is currently only covered by medium to high resolution terrain imagery. I can't wait to get more detailed imagery for the parts of the world currently not covered. Just imagine - you could check out the location of a hotel before you book your next holiday, and, with the local search overlay, get an idea of how far away your hotel is from the next shopping center/restaurant/bar/nightspot.

My verdict: Google Earth is an extremely cool tool. It's pretty exciting to zoom in on your office location and your home and getting close enough to see that your car wasn't in the driveway when the satellite image was taken. In my case, I was even able to guess how old the image was because Google Earth still displays a vacant plot of land behind our house on which new houses were built about four months ago. And the "Fly To" function, which lets you visually follow the path from one destination to the next, is simply spectacular to view.

I must admit that I haven't played with other mapping services much, but my first impression of Google Earth is that it certainly must pose a serious competitive threat for other mapping services.

Google Hits All Time Search High - What about the Rest?

According to a press release by WebSideStory, Google Search Marketing Share has grown to over 52%, which is more than double of its nearest competitor.

This is great news for Google but is it really good news for web site owners and Search Engine Marketers? Too many search engine marketers put too much emphasis on Google (in my opinon) and do not pay enough attention to the other search engines, especially Yahoo! and MSN. Ask any business owner if they are happy only reaching 52% of their potential mark and the answer would be a resounding "No!". However, I have spoken to many people around the world who only care about Google. Not a well rounded approach to growing your business.

I firmly believe that web site owners need to have a balanced approach to achieving free search traffic. I call out the recent Yahoo! Weather Update and "Google Bourbon Update" which radically changed search results. Marketers who had not placed all their search eggs in one basket are able to continue to make sales during these changes. Being too reliant on one search engine is not healthy for any business.

Focusing on the big three search engines will provide you with the vast majority of your search traffic. Once you have conquered the big three, don't forget the Tier 2 search engines including the likes of Ask Jeeves, Exact Seek etc. Whilst the traffic might not be huge in terms of the volume compared to tier ones, the extra traffic is generally worth while and can help weather any storm or hangover.

Search Engine Corporate: UK Search Engine Clicks Count for Charity

UK search engine everyclick.com is tapping into the increasing volume of Internet searches for a good cause. Every month, the search engine donates 50% of its gross revenue to charity. Where a part of the revenue generated by clicks on paid search results normally goes to pay-per-click companies like Google AdWords or Yahoo! Search, everyclick.com retains this income and distributes donations to charities on a monthly basis.

In general, donations are evenly distributed amongst listed charities, but users can influence which charity should benefit from their search activity by registering with everyclick.com and selecting specific charities to support. Currently, there are close to 100 charities listed, with a handful having received their first donation collected during the beta test period of the search engine. Overall, searches during beta testing generated nearly £1,000 in donations.

The founders, Polly Gowers and Julia Felton, developed the concept for a charity search engine while running their web traffic optimization business. It took them 18 months to get the new search engine up and running, culminating with the official launch of everyclick.com this month.

Search Engine Technology: Yahoo's! Weather Report

For the second time this year, Yahoo! has released a "search engine weather report". Well, the weather report was really just a quick update on Yahoo!'s search blog informing webmasters about the fact that Yahoo! was going to make changes to its index on June 20. Tim Mayer from Yahoo! said that webmasters could expect to see more of their pages in the index, but also cautioned that there would be some fluctuations in rankings.

Did you get caught in stormy weather or are you basking in the glorious sunshine of the index changes?

CEO Schmidt Talks Down Google Wallet

Several days after the rumors about a new PayPal style payment service from Google (code-named "Google Wallet") surfaced, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt publicly denied that Google was working on a payment system to compete head to head with eBay's PayPal.

On 21 June, Schmidt was quote in an Associated Press article as saying "We do not intend to offer a person-to-person, stored-value payments system". He then stated that "The payment services we are working on are a natural evolution of Google's existing online products and advertising programs which today connect millions of consumers and advertisers", without elaborating further.

The article (available on MSN Money) also cited that some analysts believe the new payment system could be connected to the shopping engine Froogle or be used to pay for content found through search engines.

Internally, we here at ineedhits were wondering whether cost savings and the pursuit of operational efficiencies were playing a role in Google's payment systems activities. Just think of all the publishers who have signed up to Google AdSense and are getting monthly checks or electronic funds transfers (currently still in beta) from Google when their payment is due.

I don't know what Google's cost structure for these types of transactions looks like, but the sheer volume of transactions would suggest that any kind of cost savings through cheaper payment systems could make quite a big difference to their bottom line?

I'd love to hear what you think!

Industry Research: Mortgage Keyword Prices Drop, Automotive Keyword Prices Rise

Fathom Online reports a dip in average keyword costs for May, mainly driven by a fall in mortgage related keywords prices after the Fed's latest interest rate increase. Despite the drop, average keyword prices in the "Finance - Mortgage" vertical tracked by Fathom Online still stood at $4.52. The only vertical to buck the declining trend was "Automotive", with keyword prices rising 7% to $1.50 in May.

The drop in mortgage keyword costs comes at the same time as Hitwise reports a rise in the number of searches related to the topic "real estate bubble". According to Hitwise, consumer searches for the terms "real estate bubble" and "housing bubble" reached a 12-month peak the week ending May 28, 2005. The market share of these terms across all major search engines rose 311 percent and 174 percent respectively compared to one week earlier. Hitwise further reports that traffic to real estate websites has been increasing since the seasonal slump at the end of 2004, with visits increasing on average by 3% a week.

Chris Churchill, Fathom Online's CEO, made the following comment on the May keyword prices: "In general, we expect search prices to continue to increase. As the market continues to mature, the swings will be less dramatic. For advertisers, the good news is that there will be micro-trends within and between months that sophisticated search marketers can leverage, and profitability will continue to drive more dollars into search marketing. We should also stress that the pricing fluctuations measured by the KPITM in May should be viewed only in the context of the eight categories reported and not as a proxy for the entire search industry."

Search Engine News: Move Over PayPal, Here Comes Google Wallet?

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Google is planning to launch an electronic payment service to compete with eBay's PayPal. While officials from both companies declined to comment, the WSJ suggests that this payment service, code named "Google Wallet", could be available as early as this year.

This move would help Google diversify its revenue base, which currently relies to 99% on advertising revenue. At the same time, this move would pose a serious threat to eBay. In this first quarter alone, PayPal generated 23.1% or $233.1 million of eBay's revenue. Just over 70% of this revenue was generated through the use of PayPal for eBay auctions, the remaining 30% were generated by use of PayPal on other websites. Looks like the next competitive battle between giants may be underway.

Search Engine Technology:: The Three Kinds of Search

When someone mentions "search" most people immediately think of web search. There are actually three kinds of search which are attracting attention at the moment:

Desktop Search: The ability to search a PC for the information that is required, for a variety of different file types but across a single file system.

Intranet Search: The ability to search an Intranet (the network on the inside of a firewall) for a large number of file types across a number of different storage techniques.

Internet Search: The ability to search the entire World Wide Web for a limited set of file types across a limited number of storage techniques.

Microsoft and Google have offerings in all three platforms now. Microsoft has gone down the path developing Desktop Search, then Intranet Search (through the SharePoint Portal technologies) and recently launched Web Search. Google has done the reverse of Microsoft, by forging their business ahead on the back of their Web Search technology, followed by the Google Search Appliance (Intranet Search) and providing Desktop Search.

Contrast this with Yahoo! Yahoo! are a marketing company, who went out and purchased there Web Search product (buying Inktomi outright and picking up AltaVista and Fast through the purchase of pay per click company Overture). There desktop search product has been developed by the companies. However, Intranet Search remains off the radar for Yahoo! Yahoo! choose not to continue down this path by selling off the Enterprise Search division of AltaVista to Fast Enterprise Search.

To a user, the end result remains me the same - find me the information that I want quickly. However, to the search developer, the same query in all three is totally different to service and provides many technology and business issues that may not be first apparent.

Take for example searching for you name. On the web, this is going to return all websites that contain you or some other person named the same. Also great for the ego to see your own name up in lights for your respective 15 minutes of fame or reliving past glories.

Searching on your PC for your name will return all files that contain your name in the title and content. Pictures, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, the presentation you did last week and perhaps even your music collection folder. The desktop search application must be able to read all of these different file formats and interpret them. It must understand the file system of the computer you are on (easy), the file format of the files it is searching (easy but extensive as some of these file formats may be closed) and then comes of the problem of ranking it. How do you classify as more important - the email sent last week or the document which includes your name in the title? Whilst Google has made it's name on the Page Rank algorithm, there are no links coming into your files that it can readily look at.

Now do the same search on your Intranet. All the same problems of desktop search now exist but now consider this:

  1. You are searching multiple file systems, across multiple servers (Windows, Linux, Unix etc) and even potentially, a SAN. Should it include shared PCs?
  2. The file format across the network may now be expanded to include databases, email storage systems (such as Exchange or Notes) and also document management systems.
  3. The issue of security come to mind. Should I be able to see all of these documents across the network?

Point 3 was raised at a Microsoft event I attended in late 2000 when Share Point Portal Server was launched. An employee did exactly what I have suggested and searched for his name across the Intranet. The search returned a document called "Employee Name Termination Letter Date.doc". The employee was unable to read the document but based on the title, knew that his days at the company were limited.

Whilst there is a lot to be gained from the Search companies looking at each different area of search, the challenges that exist in each are unique. I am not saying that there is not overlap across each sector but many of the lessons learnt are unique to that particular search segment. Personally I feel the area of Enterprise Search is the most complicated, if only for the reasons I have called out.

Perhaps Yahoo! is smart in not expending resources into an area that has many complexities and focusing on its core users - individuals looking to find information on their desktop or on the web.

Search Engine Technology:: Altering the Mindset

Yahoo! has recently launched (into Beta) a new program called Mindset. Mindset is a great initiative by Yahoo! because it is going to benefit both the search engine user and the search engine marketer.

Mindset provides a slider bar which alters the mix of non-commercial (informational sites) to commercial sites on a particular search topic, based on the intent of the user. For example, if you are searching for "LCD TV" the results will provide sites that are both selling LCD TV and sites which will provide information on how they work, and everything in between.

The searcher benefits by getting the results they want quicker (more relevant) and will be more likely to use Yahoo! because it has serviced their needs.

The search engine marketer will benefit because users who are interested in commercial results will now be visiting their site and not seeking information. This means that clicks in Paid Inclusion programs are not wasted on people seeking information, whilst not tying up unnecessary bandwidth on visitors who have no interest in purchasing anything.

I believe that this program could be expanded, so that when the searcher decides to remove the commercial sites, the Pay for Placement Ads are no longer shown. This will help increase conversion for search engine marketers but could see search engine revenue decrease.

To counter act this, I believe that if a full commercial search is entered, Search Engine Marketers would be willing to spend more on click, as the conversion rate should be much higher.

Hopefully Mindset will move into the main stream in the very near future.

Movers and Shakers: Findwhat + Espotting = Miva Media

Pay Per Click Search engines FindWhat and Espotting (which merged some 18 months ago in a long winded buyout) are set to rebrand their distribution network. The company's pay per click, pay per call and Adrevene Express (a self service contextual advertising network similar to Google Adsense) will be under the new brand of Miva Media. This is expected to be complete by end of June.

Miva's ecommerce service will also receive a facelift, becoming Miva Small Business. Miva Small Business is built on the Miva Merchant platform, which provides a hosted merchant storefront, payment processing, logistics management and professional services aimed at the small to medium business.

Despite the rebranding exercise, the challenge is still on for Miva Media to deliver quality traffic to its advertisers that provides a positive ROI.

The company's symbol on the NASDAQ will also change to "MIVA" on June 13th 2005.

Google today announced that they have released a beta program that will increase the amount of control that site owners and search engine marketers have over which pages are indexed by "googlebot".

The experimental program (which according to Google Engineer Shiva Shivakumar will "either fail miserably or succeed beyond our wildest dreams") is called Google Sitemaps and aims to optimize Google's crawling activities. This is achieved by:
