New Google Release: "My Location" for Google Maps Mobile
Google has recently released a new service for Google Maps Mobile users which allows them to use a GPS without actually connecting to a GPS satellite.
This new service, My Location provides approximate location information for those of us who haven't got a GPS.
For those of us lucky enough to have a GPS, it can also compliment GPS locations information because My Location works better indoors than GPS, it doesn't drain the phone battery as quickly and can produce a quicker result, although it may not be as accurate as GPS.
The beta launched technology uses cell tower identification to provide approximate locations. Basically, it calculates a user's location by measuring the distance of the phone from nearby base stations. Google hopes to get within one quarter to three miles of a users location.
According to the My Location Product Manager, Steve Lee, My Location "helps users speed up search by showing the general neighbourhood they're in".
So is there the potential to advertise on this service? It currently doesn't feature any advertising; however Lee has said that "this product makes a lot of sense for advertising". So we will have to keep our ears to the ground on this one.
This service will undoubtedly be a great advantage to those of you that subscribe to the ineedhits
Local Search Listing
service, which gives your business instant locally targeted exposure online, including on Google Local, plus a host of other search engines.
If you would like to download this feature to your phone and give it a try, Google has a free download of this application available at

we would love to here what you think of it.
