"A knol on a particular topic is meant to be the first thing someone who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read. The goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions. Google will not serve as an editor in any way, and will not bless any content. All editorial responsibilities and control will rest with the authors. "

Honestly,Think it's kind of selfish and unecessary. Does the internet need more of the same information. What's going to end up happening is that instead of having 5 great resources for 1 thing i.e. yahoo answers, wikipedia etc. We're going to 400 and our search results are going to be filled with crap. Now it's great for SEO's as it gives us news backlinks, but I'm so tired of reading the same information about the same topic on 20 sites. WE DON'T NEED MORE. That's just my personal opinion. As for Google's domination, we'll they obviously realise that's where alot of search results lead to so why not steal those page rankings too...
