New Google Geographic Location Tool Now Live

Google have further enhanced their suite of Google Webmaster tools with their latest Geographic location tool. The new enhancement allows webmasters to better control the country association attached to their website.

Announced last Wednesday on the official Google blog, the tool will allow webmasters to set a geographical association to their website to improve the chance it will be found in country specific search results.

Country association is used in ranking search results, (for example searches on Google.com.au will show more Australian search results than Google.com) as well as inclusion in country specific searches (if a user only wants search results from a specific country.)

To use the tool login to Google Webmaster Tools and select "Set geographic target". If your site has a country specific domain, Google will display the appropriate country association, but if it's a general domain (such as .com or .net) you will be able to select the location. See below:

If no information is entered, Google will continue to use the top level domain (eg .com.au or .ca) or the IP address of the web server which serves your content to determine location.

According to Google,

"This feature was largely initiated by your feedback, so thanks for the great suggestion. Google is always committed towards helping more sites and users get better and more relevant results. This is a new step as we continue to think about how to improve searches around the world."
