Google: Garage to Global (and back again!)

Google have revisited their roots with the recent purchase of their original operating premises, a house in Menlo Park, California. Belonging to Susan Wojcicki (now their Vice President of Product Management), Google founders Larry Page & Sergey Brin rented the garage, in September 1998, for 5 months. Gathering nearly $1 million in initial investment, Google Inc., operating in beta, processed around 10,000 queries a day from their garage abode. As their eighth birthday passes, Google are well and truly global, handling 366 million queries, per day, this past July. According to studies by comScore qsearch, September 2006 saw Google sites leading search query volume with 2.9 billion searches conducted, followed by Yahoo! Sites (1.8 billion) and MSN-Microsoft Sites (818 million).

Aptly named Silicon Valley has a number of 'garages to glory' stories. Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded HP in 1939, building their first audio oscillator in a Palo Alton garage. April Fools Day 1976, foundation day of Apple, saw Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs working from a Cupertino Garage.

Figuratively returning home, Google have not disclosed their intentions for the house, nor the price they have paid for their little bit of heritage. However, it would seem that they are not keen to forget where they came from, and are certainly do not want to lose sight of where they are going, lest another garage burgeons global competition!
