Google Gets Dumped by Amazon's A9 and Alexa

Is it a sign of the times? Assumptions this early might be hasty, but the alarm bells are surely ringing down at the Googleplex. Amazon's A9 search and Alexa, both highly recognized and trafficked online services, have dumped Google for their search results.

To add salt to the wounds, Google has been replaced by its arch nemesis Microsoft, aka Windows Live Search. This surely has Bill Gates smiling while Serge and Larry rue the loss.

Speculation in the industry suggests this could be the first Google dumping of many, as the search giant has made its intentions clear that pure search is no longer its only goal. With the unveiling of Google Base and other extensions to the empire, Google is starting to stretch its relationship with many of the websites that have served its results for years.

As Google vies to gain market share across the online shopping vertical and other portal directions, it will continue to lose some of its trusty alliances, as these organizations are not prepared to have Google competing against them. Let's face it, why would Amazon want to serve competing ads for books across its websites.

The interesting side to this story is that MSN has recently launched a new online shopping service to compliment the existing MSN shopping portal, so this new union could be short lived. Perhaps Amazon is just testing options before deciding on a complete transition away from Google results.

At the end of the day, the real winner in these turbulent internet times will be the search engines dedicated purely to search, as they present no significant risk to the sites hosting their results. This could be the renaissance of the smaller engines such as Ask.com as one blog suggested. Only time will tell, but stay tuned as speculation of more Google dumpings are sure to ensue.
