Rumors about Google Base
Industry insiders got very excited last week when a glimpse of a new Google offering was sighted. Called Google Base, Google has positioned the service as a "Google database into which you can easily submit all types of online and offline content", which Google will host and make searchable. Users will be able to add attributes so that information can be found easier, and Google leaves the possibility open that Google Base content may be included into the Google search index, Froogle or Google Local.
Google envisage submitted content to include anything from cake recipes and your attempts at poetry to scientific papers about life-threatening diseases. According to Google, "if you have information to share with others, but aren't sure how to go about gaining an audience, Google Base is for you."
What does Google get out of it? The rumor mills started going into overdrive, imagining Google Base as a competition to online auction house eBay or community classified site Craigslist, and older speculations about a payment system Google might be working on were added to the mix.
Google later dampened speculation by releasing a brief statement saying "We are testing a new way for content owners to submit their content to Google, which we hope will complement existing methods such as our web crawl and Google Sitemaps. We think it's an exciting product, and we'll let you know when there's more news."
With this kind of vague statement, you can still imagine all sorts of commercial uses - so watch this space and see what happens!
